Snapchat was once the social media upstart stealing consumers from established platforms. Snap is on the defence as TikTok steals users. Snap announced the Pixy camera drone earlier this year to revive interest in its service. Snap Pixy drone experiment didn’t proceed as planned, according to a recent report.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Snap CEO Evan Spiegel revealed in a staff meeting that the company will sunset Pixy. He said halting camera drone manufacturing is part of a recession-related reprioritization of corporate resources.
Existing Pixy stock will still be sold to consumers, but don’t expect a Pixy 2.0. Pixy’s short lifetime won’t help a firm that has to fight harder every year to show its relevance.
If you use Snapchat but don’t have the photogenic Snap Pixy Drone, don’t worry. Snap will still sell the remaining inventory of the existing Pixy on its web shop, a source said. The drone, bumper, carrying strap, rechargeable battery, and USB-C cable cost $230. Due of the twin battery charger and extra batteries, the flight pack costs $250.
Every Pixy flight is in your palm. Hover, Reveal, Follow, and Orbit. Follow has the drone track your motions and trail behind you while it takes images and video; Hover lets it hover in position and pan the camera in any direction; Reveal backs the drone away to display the backdrop; and Orbit shoots 360-degree photos and videos.
All Pixy photos are stored to Snapchat Memories when the flight finishes. From there, edit and post on Snapchat or another network. A full battery only powers 5 to 8 trips, so make them count.
Pixy is Snap’s second hardware product following 2016’s Snapchat Spectacles. 2019’s version captures 3D photos and videos.
