Should you buy iPhone 14?
Upgrades
Cutout pill
Apple ditched the notch on the iPhone 14 that debuted with the iPhone X.
2022 iPhones may include a pill-shaped notch to contain the TrueDepth Face ID camera, sensors, and more.
Sizes change
The iPhone 14 lineup should shake up recent trends. 9to5Mac reported exclusively that Apple will eliminate the iPhone small and sell an iPhone 14 Max alongside the iPhone 14, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max.
Pro models need larger screens.
iPhone 14 comes in four variants sans a’mini’ version, Pro models have bigger screens.
Upgraded cameras
Kuo says the iPhone 14’s front-facing camera will be improved. Upgrades to the front-facing camera’s auto-focus and iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 48-megapixel sensors are major advancements.
Kuo also expects an 8K camera upgrade. The iPhone camera bulge should remain.
USB-C?
Apple’s portless iPhone has been rumoured for a while. Both aren’t expected this year.
Kuo and Bloomberg foresee a changeover to USB-C in 2023, but the iPhone 14 will continue with Lightning.
Lightning may get USB 3.0 this year, but the rumour seems shaky.
A16/A15 chip
This year may be the first time Apple changes its iPhone chip strategy.
Historically, all new iPhones get Apple’s newest A-series technology, but this year only the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will have the A16. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max would have the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13.
Time will tell how much Apple’s A16 chip improves performance.
TouchID?
Early iPhone 14 reports indicated Apple would add under-display Touch ID in 2022, but this seems unlikely.
Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple delayed under-display Touch ID till 2023. That suggests iPhone 14 will have Face ID.
Increased price?
Apple usually keeps iPhone prices similar to prior versions (when they originally launched). In this year’s challenging economy, prices may rise.
Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will price $100 higher this year. We predict Apple will discontinue the iPhone small and unveil the 14 Max.
