You’re in the middle of anything on your iPhone; whether it be work or play; and you don’t want to be bothered with incoming calls, texts, or any other forms of communication. Focus is an option that may be useful.
Focus, first introduced in iOS 15 as a replacement for “Do Not Disturb,” has been improved in iOS 16 to make it more functional and user-friendly.
The newest flavour of Focus requires the beta version of iOS 16 that is currently accessible. Focus may be adjusted in Settings after the update. The screen shows a default set of Focus profiles. Do Not Disturb, Driving, Personal, Sleep, and Work are some of the options, however they may differ depending on whether you’re using an iPhone or iPad. Each profile is tailored to a specific task, pastime, or period of the day. The next step is to modify the profiles you intend to utilise, a procedure that has been revised and simplified in iOS 16.

iPhone Focus On/Off
Choose Do Not Disturb as your iPhone Focus profile. Under Allow Notifications, choose who and what to notify. Choose People. Based on your past interactions, Focus suggests persons to notify. Tap the minus symbol next to anyone whose alerts you want to block. Tap the plus symbol and select recipients.
iPhone Focus Mode: How to quiet particular notifications
Under Phone Calls, tap Allow Calls From and select Everyone, Allowed People Only, Favorites, or Contacts Only. Allow Repeated Calls is activated so emergency callers can phone many times.
Tap Silence Notifications From. Tap the plus icon and choose who to mute. This technique only works on iOS 16 (or iPadOS 16) devices. If you wish to accept calls from people you blocked, toggle on Allow Calls From Silenced People.
Backtrack. Tap Apps. People-like process. Remove any listed apps from Allow Notifications From. Tap the + icon and pick applications for notifications.
Select Silence Notifications From. Tap the + symbol to add apps that shouldn’t send notifications. To see time-sensitive notifications, turn them on.
Lock Screen Silenced Notifications
You may now go back one screen. The choice of alternatives can be accessed by selecting the corresponding menu item. Here you can choose to have notifications from apps you’ve muted appear on the Lock Screen instead of in the Notification Center; to have the Lock Screen darken when this Focus profile is active; and to have the notification badges for apps you’ve muted disappear from the Home screen.
You should back up one screen. The next step is to customise your Lock Screen and Home screen to aid in your quest to disable notifications. In addition to supporting different Focus profiles, iOS 16 also allows you to build and change personalised Lock Screens. Select the primary thumbnail under Screen Settings. To have a certain Lock Screen show up when the Do Not Disturb profile is activated, choose one from the list. Click the second preview to select the Home screen that will be displayed when Do Not Disturb is activated.
Notification Times and Dates
Do Not Disturb is an option that can be activated at any time by the user. On the other hand, you might want to have it take effect only at certain periods or under certain conditions.
Select Add Schedule from the menu under the “Turn On Automatically” heading. When Do Not Disturb is activated automatically, you can select the initial Time option and set a precise beginning and ending time as well as one or more days. Select Location and then type in the address where you would like this profile to be displayed. Then, tap App and choose an app that, when accessed, will trigger Do Not Disturb mode. Do Not Disturb can also be activated automatically via Smart Activity, which takes into account your current location, app usage, and other factors.
Apple’s iOS 16 introduces a new Focus option called Focus Filters. Which filters out specific app material. You may want to receive only particular text messages or view only certain calendars.
Add Filter. Choose the app’s filter. Add a Calendar to see when Do Not Disturb is on. Choose an account in Mail. In Messages, filter by person. Choose tab groups for Safari filters.
You can also enable Appearance (light/dark mode) and Low Power Mode filters. The iOS 16 beta has few filters; but the future OS could have more.
Make new profiles
After setting up Do Not Disturb. You can enable Driving, Personal, Sleep, and Work profiles. All have the same or similar options. You can delete unused profiles. Swipe down the profile’s screen and tap Delete Focus.
Add a Focus. Tap the plus icon in Focus’ primary settings. Fitness, Gaming, Mindfulness, or Reading. Customize the profile’s people, applications, screens, filters, and other choices.
Name and colour the Focus profile symbol. Customize settings, people, and apps.
Turn on Share Across Devices in Focus Settings if you want the same profiles and settings on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. Select Focus Status. Here, you can control which Focus profiles let apps know you’ve muted notifications.
Turning on a Focus profile is easy. Swipe up or down to open Control Center. Tap Focus and select a profile. Then, tap the profile’s ellipsis to set its duration. Finally, Tap New Focus to create a new Focus profile.
