If you’re getting rid of an old iPhone, iPad, or Android, wipe it first. Apple and Android devices let you wipe personal data, apps, and content to prevent snooping.
This restores the phone or tablet to factory settings. You can sell or recycle your iPhone or Android there. Wiping your phone is easy, but the processes vary per operating system.

iPhone and iPad Reset
Before resetting an Apple device, disconnect Find My and iCloud. Same approach for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
1. Disable Find My iPhone
First, disable Find My App tracking. Tap your name in Settings. Turn off Find My iPhone (or iPad) on your Apple ID page. Enter your Apple ID password.
2. Leave iCloud
Tap your name in Settings to sign out. Swipe your account screen down and tap Sign Out. You’re then asked if you wish to keep Health, Keychain, and Safari on this device. Turn off these items.
Sign out twice to confirm. By leaving iCloud, Find My is disabled. You should also receive an email saying Find My has been disabled.
3. Delete personal information
Then wipe personal data. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone in Settings > General. Continue after tapping Erase All Content and Settings. Then enter your passcode to confirm. To reset the phone, tap Erase iPhone.
Your device will be erased and reset. After resetting, your device reboots to the setup screen. Now it’s ready for disposal or a new owner.
Android Reset
Manufacturers’ reset procedures vary. We can’t cover every device and OS version, but phone brands are similar.
1. Encrypt device
If your device permits it, encrypt your data in case someone gets past the wipe and sees it. Encryption makes your personal data unreadable.
Android Settings > Security. Encrypt your device. Search “encryption” in Settings to find the proper option. If your gadget isn’t encrypted, encrypt it. Your device must be charged.
Upon confirmation, the process begins. You can’t use your device then. Your phone restarts afterward. You can then check encryption on the Encryption options screen.
2. Delete Everything
Now you must reset your smartphone. Android manufacturers, devices, and OS versions may affect the procedure. Find Backup & reset, General Management, and System under Settings. Search for “Reset” in Settings.
Find Factory Reset or Erase all data . Tap to see what the reset will delete and your signed-in accounts. Reset to continue. You enter your password and confirm. Tap Erase Everything or Delete All to delete all data and reset the device. After resetting, the Welcome screen should appear. Now you may turn it off and pack.
How Do I Start My Phone?
These methods work if your phone is functioning normally. If your phone won’t power on, you can reset it using a computer or Recovery Mode.
