Benchmarks Reveal Galaxy Flip 4 Secret

Galaxy Flip 4

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 have fast processors and can run games at 120 fps, but the Z Flip 4 has a fault.

When under severe load, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 throttles down harder than any other phone I’ve encountered.

Faster processors

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processors worldwide. Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is 10% quicker and 30% more power efficient than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the Galaxy S22. (We’ll test battery efficiency.)

The 8+ Gen 1 contains four 2GHz cores, three 2.75GHz cores, and one 3.2GHz prime core. OnePlus 10T and Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro run 8+ Gen 1.

On Geekbench, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 phones outperform Galaxy S22+. The improvement isn’t as substantial on PCMark’s application test, but it’s there. They’re swift and powerful.

Bad News: Gasping

The Flip 4’s Achilles heel is CPU throttling. Phone performance slows quickly.

Flip 4 and Fold 4 had similar 15-minute performance. After a few minutes, the Flip throttled far less than the Fold. (The OnePlus 10T throttled less than any Samsung I tested in Performance mode.)

This too wore out quickly. Alto’s Odyssey, a casual game, was followed by Genshin Impact, a high-performance game. Medium visuals and 60fps were used in Genshin Impact. I tested frame rate and temperature with WeTest PerfDog.

Both phones played 120fps Alto’s Odyssey. The Flip reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit, while the Fold stayed at 98.6.

Using Genshin slowed the Flip to 38-39fps after six minutes, while the Fold hit 40-52fps.

The OnePlus 10T averaged 57fps and often hit the 60fps gaming limit, something the Flip and Fold couldn’t achieve. Before my final review, I’ll retest.

Not a gaming phone

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 isn’t a gaming phone, as these findings show. The strange aspect ratio when held in landscape is a factor. Maximizing performance under load isn’t the goal. Samsung’s foldable form presents thermal management issues.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is great for photographs, videos, social media, and gaming. It won’t overheat whether watching films, browsing the web, or playing Pokemon Go. The Z Flip and Z Fold 4 got great reception.
Galaxy Z Fold 4 performs better under stress. Better performance playing Genshin Impact or PUBG Mobile or recalculating a spreadsheet during a video conversation.
I’m currently reviewing the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4. Check back for additional details.
