Apple iOS 12

First Apple iOS 12 update since September 2021.

iOS 12.5.6 fixes CVE-2022-32893. Apple says this WebKit flaw “may lead to arbitrary code execution” Apple iOS 12 should fix this flaw.

iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey 12.5.1 received CVE-2022-32893 patches on Aug. 17. (Apple says another vulnerability, CVE-2022-32894, doesn’t affect iOS 12 devices.)

Last week’s Apple iOS 12 update fixed vulnerabilities in Core Graphics, Core Telephony, WebKit, and XNU. Since August 2019, every version of iOS 12 is exclusive to devices that can’t run iOS 13.
This update is available for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch 6th generation. Apple says “this issue may have been actively exploited,” so owners should install the patch.

Pre-Installation

Prepare yourself and your device before downloading Apple iOS 12.5.6. Few minutes of preparation can prevent problems.

Our pre-installation guide can help you prepare for iOS updates. It shows what we do before a large update.

Most people can complete these steps in 30 minutes or less, depending on skill level and device condition.

Pre-installation could take longer if you haven’t backed up your data or researched iOS 12 changes.

We recommend backing up all your important data before upgrading to iOS 12.5.6.

Apple iOS 12.5.6

Once ready, download iOS 12.5.6. Again, download size depends on device and iOS version.

Apple iOS 12.5.5 has the smallest download size. Most models have few megabytes.

If you have fast Wi-Fi, the download could take under five minutes. Our Wi-Fi download took less than five minutes.

If you’re using an older iOS version, the firmware download could take 10 minutes or more.

Installation

After downloading iOS 12.5.5 from Apple’s servers, you must install it. The upload will take longer.

Moving from iOS 12.5.5 to iOS 12.5.6 may take seven minutes. Moving from an older iOS version may take longer. iPhone 5s installation took seven minutes.

If you’re upgrading from iOS 11 to iOS 12 for the first time, expect a longer installation. 20-30 minutes?

As the installation finishes, your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may reboot once or twice.

After installation, your device will boot normally.

Post-Installation

After it’s done, you may need to set up Apple Pay, log into iCloud, and sign into apps and services.

Check your important data (photos, music, etc). Check everything before installing Apple iOS 12.5.6.

We also suggest testing your core apps and services. Major updates tend to break apps, so check them out. iOS 12 support may need updating.

Bugs and your device’s battery life, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth performance should also be monitored.

iOS updates shouldn’t affect your device’s performance, but it could. If you have a problem with iOS 12.5.6, see our list of fixes.
